2011: the good & the bad!

December 24th, 2011 — 6:02am

So here we are New Years Eve. It’s been a super busy year, one of lots of change, it’s been challenging at times but it has certainly taught us lots. We say hello to 2012 a wiser family in many ways. Here’s our round up:

Lowlights
Mr L’s employer started to struggle financially in January
Wages became at best sporadic, but mostly not at all
We discovered Lil’ H had a loss of hearing which required grommet surgery
We had to pay stamp duty & lots of other boring costs to move house, sorry but they totalled close to £25,000 and I remain bitter!
In November Mr L’s employer went into administration making us income free – argh!
I made a friend who reminded me how false & insincere people can be

Highlights
We sold our old house
Diva G started walking
We enjoyed a great Royal Wedding weekend with good friends
Lil H turned 4 years old
We had a great break at Center Parcs
We held an amazing naming day with family & close friends
We had a fab, almost rain free, fortnight on holiday in Cornwall
We bought & moved into our new home and project for the next decade!
Lil H started full time school, settled in well, has lots of friends and has developed massively
I stepped back up to do more freelance work continuing to work with great clients and also gaining more clients & projects
I ran some projects that I was able to work with my online community, sharing good stuff with them
Baby G turned 2yo promoted to Diva G & started a couple of mornings at Pre-school
Mr L released from the shackles of employment started his own handyman/joinery business in Cheshire (go – like his Facebook page!), less than two months in and we already know we won’t look back.
I value myself. I don’t like everyone and I don’t expect everyone to like me. I’m cool with that.

Looking ahead
I have had a theme word rather than resolutions for the last two years, 2010 was a year of enjoyment, 2011 was a year of change. Both lived up to their themes. 2012 is a year to PLAN. I am woefully behind on blogging house updates that’s just putting living life with two kids, a house move and a redundancy I’ve been surviving life with very little time to document it. I have my mojo back as a blogger, a mother, a professional, a person. I’ve missed it. So now, now I’ve got ideas and thoughts and I need to reflect and PLAN, first up is find an architect to get my Pinterest inspired dreams into plans that can be both approved and afforded. So that’s the PLAN for 2012 to PLAN!

Wishing you a fantastic 2012!

Themeword 2011

January 12th, 2011 — 11:50pm

Rather than resolutions last year I set a Themeword for the year which was ENJOYMENT.  We were getting ready to go or on holiday or just back from holiday for most of the year so I’m declaring this Themeword achieved!  Sure life inevitably threw challenges at me but my Themeword helped me through the year – “does this fit in with my plan for Enjoyment this year?” I asked myself frequently, it helped me not do many things I probably would have done and my life is better off for that.

I’ve said No more, but for all the right reasons.  I’ve not done or organised certain things I always do.  As a result we’ve not seen some friends as often as we have before but the truth is if we only get together because I make it happen then, well, that’s just good to know.  “We’ve not seen you for ages” … “Of course it would be great to see you, what do you suggest?!”  I only have 24 hours in my day, just like anyone else, so things that are always land on my doorstep to organise, coordinate, drive and make happen someone else can pick up for once because you know what our family is very young, we have a gorgeous baby and a fab little boy, I juggle work, family, life, and I always do more, I always do over and above and right now my hands are overflowing and I don’t have to.  A real friend will know this is the space I am in, understand and be there.  I have many friends, some friends are are greater than I thought and others not.  Having my Themeword as Enjoyment has given me great clarity and a great year.

So where to now and 2011?  I am following Bec’s lead over at Beetroot & Gherkins, I’m not getting rid of this one, ENJOYMENT is still hugely important, however a priority of 2011 is CHANGE. I need CHANGE, I thrive on CHANGE and becoming mother and then a family of four has been massive CHANGE.  Now we are moving away from babydom towards toddler days, Lil H starts in reception at proper school in September *gulp* *bites back tears*  We are ready to CHANGE where & how we live.  I’m craving more challenge other than the never ceasing challenge of parenting.  I suppose I mean challenging the pre-mummy person, she’s still in there, a professional and an individual – I’m not sure that makes total sense to me let alone anyone else.

Some stuff I want to do this year is:

  1. Sell our house
  2. Find our next home
  3. Get back to pre-pregnancy weight
  4. Host a naming ceremony / family celebration for H & G
  5. Continue working and building my business

I’m planning to carry on blogging if you’re still interested?  Still reading still subscribed?  What are you thinking?  Got a Themeword?  Leave me a link to your Themeword and plans for 2011!

Loved and Looking

February 20th, 2010 — 1:25am

This post is the first in what I plan to be a every couple of months or so updates called “Loved and Looking“.  These will be posts about stuff I have loved doing, discovering and buying, a recap if you like.  Any details that have been passed to me by a PR or stuff I have been given is explicitly mentioned.

I don’t have time to keep a full diary but I will find it helpful as and when I sit down to write Baby G’s first year book of the things we’ve loved and whenever anyone asks where did you get that from I will be able to remember and find the links!  If I like it maybe you’ll like it?  Leave a comment and let me know.  Looking is a heads up to what is on the horizon at Lancaster Towers, maybe folks reading this will be able to share useful links and tips to ease us through 2010.  This is all connected to my #themeword for 2010 of ENJOYMENT and trying to stay focussed on the simple, great and good things there are in life.  For me its about sharing – me with you and hopefully you with me, so here goes:

Loved
Unless you are new to my blog I’ve recently been pregnant and then breast feeding.  I wore lots of maternity and nursing clothes the majority of which I bought from Love Maternity which I highly recommend, just got this fab new coat in their sale so if you want a bargain they are there but not for long!  I was also given a dress and vest to try for Wonder Mummy which I really rated too, you can read my review here.  The gospel on maternity fashions can be found at The Bumpwear Project so if you are sporting a bump everything need to know about clothing it is there.

I’m new to this having a daughter thing but everything about baby girls clothes is just fabulous!  I love buying her clothes and choosing her outfits, I have far too many but Baby G’s Sophie 4 Sophie dresses are my favourites.  Current total Sophie 4 Sophie dresses purchased to date are four & counting! If you don’t know about these, well, you do know – *warning they are addictive*  I also love this ladybird outfit by Urban Elk which I bought from Lord and Lady Tantrum (a local Cheshire mum run business).  I am also a HUGE fan of Catimini for both H and G which my mum mostly gets from the lovely Kirsty and Milly at Button Nose in Bramhall – how cute is Baby G’s coat?  I love it so much I also have it in 9-12months size too – eek – I know that is bad!

Baby G in one of her Sophie 4 Sophie dressesBaby G's Urban Elk Ladybird Set

It’s been a manic few months and if anything only going to get busier.  I was given a months supply of Femibion to try by their lovely PR peeps, I suspect after going on about taking Berocca on Twitter a lot, being honest I was a bit sceptical, a multivitamin is a multivitamin isn’t it?  Well actually it surprised me and I rate it.  I’ve had a couple of nights out and one too many Martini plus we’ve had a few colds & toddler nightmares to increase the sleep deprivation to put it through its paces and it now is on my monthly big shop shopping list.

Adjusting to life with two kids has taken a while but we are getting there, I have realised quite how much I need both my hands which is quite challenging so have bought a baby carrier, from Claire at SnugBaby and as a family we are all really enjoying it.  We now own more buggies and prams than we have children but they all have their purpose and time of use and the baby carrier gives us extra flexibility and I like to think its helping me burn off a few extra calories in my lose the baby weight mission!  Bashfulness never wins any prizes so Baby G has been entered in the competition over at SnugBaby so if you have a second please could you vote for her by clicking on the badge below and then the little heart by us on the page?  Thank you!

Vote for Claire and Grace

Another twitter discovery has been Manuka Baby which is run by the very lovely, of New Zealand origin, Alaina.  I treated Baby G to one of her fabulous SleepSac’s I was feeling bit sad/guilty about the fact that all her sleeping bags had been slept in before by her brother and have a very definite car/boat/pirate/blue thing going on!  Since then we have been tweeting and Alaina has lured me out of maternity leave to help support her with the marketing elements of her business for a few hours a week.  I am loving being back in the marketing saddle and using that part of my brain again.

Looking
We are nearly at the end of February which means we are nearly at the final countdown for the Lego Discovery Centre which opens in March.  The latest from the PR office is that tickets will cost from £7 are now on sale – call 0871 222 2662 to book.  Full details on the site here.

We are looking forward to our first visit to Centre Parcs, we are Elveden Forest bound during a cheap “the kids are back at school” week.  We’re off with our pals who’s toddler is a best friend of H’s so we are all looking forward to that.  Baby G will be getting her first swimming experience too – I really hope she likes swimming ….

… as we are off on a family holiday to Egypt in March – eek – Family Lancaster along with our pals Family P are jetting off to sunnier climes for a week – the last year has been a tough one and after the last six months with a toddler and teeny we deserve it.  Have a HUGE to do & to buy list just to get there!  The kids passports are done – it was easier than expected, did the application online and took their photo’s myself using the PasPic service, you just upload them, they check they will meet the criteria and send you four passport photos back for the bargain price of £3.95 – simples!  It will be the first time on a plane that isn’t the Manchester to Cornwall hop so all suggestions and links on this imminent challenge very welcome.

Lil’ H’s 3rd Birthday in April – we got him a micro scooter & balance bike for Christmas so struggling a bit with the gift ideas list.  It’s building in my head, so far I have fancy dress outfits (especially hats!), a keyboard, a microphone, an easel, crafty things and bigger toy box on list – all suggestions and links on this one again very welcome!

The launch of Love it Love it Love it it is a new venture of one of my Twitter pals, launching in March 2010 and I’m very excited for her, she’s shared with me some of the stock she’s sourced and it rocks!  Not only is the stock going to rock, I have no doubt it won’t be around for long so if you want the heads up on launch date become a Facebook fan or a Twitter follower - you can thank me later!

LoveItLoveItLoveIt

Not exactly looking forward to this but will start weaning Baby G when she turns 6 months in April *sniffs* my baby is growing up … will be learning about Baby Led Weaning and planning to take that approach, weaning with Lil’ H was one of my many parenting fails so there is plenty of room for improvement for this mummy!

Christ almighty, baby wearing and baby led weaning I’ll be in tie dye & Birkenstocks next!  Never fear darlings it can all be done in Choo’s of the Jimmy variety!  As you can see the to do list is HUGE so better stop blogging and get cracking!

Love, Claire x

My Themeword 2010

January 12th, 2010 — 9:40pm

I wanted, and have been attempting, to write a New Years Resolutions post as the new decade approached.  But I’ve been really struggling with it.  There is so much I would like to do and achieve.  As I started to compile the list it quickly felt so big I was ready to throw the towel in on the lot and the post got saved as draft and abandoned for another day.  If I can’t write the damn post I’m never going to achieve the resolutions in it!

I discovered blogging and tweeting this year and want to do more and be better at both!  I also want to lose weight – of course and let’s not forget the other annual entries – work less, earn more, spend less, do more exercise, be more patience, swear less, watch less TV, spend less time on the PC, cook from scratch more, not drink during the week  … hang on Mr L is shouting me - A glass of wine you say?  Oh yes please!  … Save as draft!

That is how I got to 12th January with no post about my thoughts, goals and intentions for the new year and new decade.  Then I came across #Themeword (god bless twitter!) via Erica Douglas who created the #themeword meme in 2007.  To participate, all you have to do is just think about one word that you would like to describe your new year.  Allegedly your #themeword can unfold in unexpected ways!  So here goes …

My Themeword for 2010 is ENJOYMENT.

I am going to ENJOY the now in 2010.  I’m not going to do things I don’t ENJOY or give time to things or people I don’t ENJOY.  Life is too short and my family and time with them too precious.  I want to ENJOY food and still be able to ENJOY smaller clothes!  I want to ENJOY my freelance work.  I want to ENJOY time with my children especially whilst they are so little.  I want to ENJOY time as a family.  I want to have time to ENJOY by myself.  Now whilst I hate laundry I do enjoy it being all done and my home clean and tidy, to get another cleaner would probably suggest I headed back to the workplace – so sadly I’m not off the hook on domestic chores, just to explain some of the small print I’ve made up for myself!

This is a meme so I am going to tag a few folk but if like me resolutions feel too much to commit to consider yourself tagged!  What’s great about this meme is if you don’t need a blog to post your thoughts, if you just tweet you can still join in!  I’d love to know what the following folk would have as their #Themewords

Jordan Fleet
Sarah Walters
Clare at Love Maternity
Claire over at The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
Wendy over at The Life of Wendy Wife
Dany at Tums2Mums
Bec over at Beetroot and Gherkins
Muddling Along Mummy
Violet Posy
Stefanie Hopkins
Bumbling Along

Search #themeword on Twitter to see everyone who has been Tweeting their #themeword.

Happy New Year!  Please feel free to post or link to your own themewords in the comments below!
