Family Games Competition

Playing family games together is one of the many lovely additions of my children growing up  increasingly popular at Villa Lancaster especially as the weather is deteriorating and rainy days are on the increase.  I love the sound of Lil H and Diva G squawking with laughter as they score or win.  Esdevium Games sent us a couple of games to review and they also have one of each for me to giveaway too, perfect timing for October half term and Christmas.

Fly Trap Action Board Game is a game for children over 4 which can be played with 2 to 4 players and is a big hit in this household.  The FlyTrap spins and turns and the goal is to shoot as many flies into the FlyTrap’s open mouth as possible.  Other players push their pumps to close the trap to try to stop others from scoring.  Its fast and fun and makes for a perfect Christmas gift.

We are waiting for cousin Dan to come over to play Hey That’s My Fish Board Game as it is aimed at children aged 8+.  This is a family game accessible for all but we need cousin Dan to team up with Lil H and Diva G for ease.  Like all good children’s games it is easy to pick up but difficult to master and there are rewards for mastering the strategy but the aim of the game is to collect as many fish with your penguins as possible.  A great addition to the games cupboard for those rainy autumn and winter days ahead.

To enter to win just leave me a comment, tell me what your favourite childhood game was, mine was Guess Who?  Additional entry options for tweeting, facebooking etc. are optional.  Good luck!

My favourite game as a child was beetle drive. Each player had to throw the dice to earn the body, head, antennae and legs of a beetle and the aim was to be the first one to complete their beetle.

The head was worth 6, the body 5, the antennae 4, and the legs 3. So you had to throw those numbers to get the parts for your beetle.

  2. Sam

    I have always loved Monopoly.

  3. Attachment Mummy

    Mouse Trap and Monopoly

  4. Carolin

Scrabble – I fell in love with it when I learned my first letters in school :)

  5. Karen K

I grew up with 2 brothers and we regularly played Battleships. I loved it but was never good at it, me elder brother always won!

Another family favourite was Yahtzee. The game with 6 dice. I remember sitting round the kitchen table with my mum and brothers. It could get really competitive but little did I know it was like a sneaky maths lesson from my mum ;)

  6. Katie T

Loving all this reminiscing! So many games that i loved, Guess Who was one of my favourites and also loved Downfall and Boggle when i got a bit older :-)

  7. Becky

    Scrabble and it still is!

  8. Margaret

My favourite was a sort of imagination game. Obviously barbie and action man were a couple, but my favourite game was taking them on holiday to the sandpit in their aeroplane (milleneum falcon) with their children (pippa and strawberry shortcake ) and their pet ewak (little brown ewak, wicket??).
They would have a great holiday out there until annoyed older brother would swap ewak for R2D2 and things went a bit down hill!! Great fun!!

Board games were not so easy in the sand pit, but I do remember playing battleships in the back of my dads brown estate car when we were meant to be sleeping on a drive on holiday once! Probably the highlight of that holiday!

  9. Ness Gorton

my fave had to be frustration! Infact this year I’ve bought it for my son ;0)

  12. Dee Johnson

My favorite as a child was Frustration. It kept us occupied for hours and was a really fun game that we could all play. Its been 30 years and the game is still going strong in our house now with my children. We have seven children in all and every one of them love Frustration.

Another good thing about it was there were hardly any bits and bobs to lose and the dice was sealed in so there wer no tears when half of the bits of the other games had gone a miss. They have bought a new Frustration out but its no where near as good as the old one. If I see the older version on the car boot I always buy it so we have lots of spare parts if any of the bits go missing which they harldly ever do.

Probably Monopoly, but I did always enjoy anything that was ‘Pop-o-matic’ – Frustration and Ludo spring to mind. Pop-o-matic was where the 2 dice were in a plastic popping thing in the middle of the board that saved you from throwing the dice around yourself. Ideal if you were a bit lazy!!! No idea if they still do that nowadays.
